Over half a million specimens, natural history literature and data extending back over three centuries are housed in this museum, which includes hundreds of British birds displayed in recreated natural settings. Butterflies, skeletons, a whale and dinosaur bones are also a feature.

The museum also houses mechanical toys and models, dolls house furniture, puppets and theatres, social, educational and domestic artefacts, which date from the 1790s.
